Frequently asked questions
Are generated passwords sent to a server?
No. Generation runs entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API available to the page. The generated password is displayed in your tab and can be copied by you, but Plinkr does not receive, store, log, or sync the password.
What password length should I use?
Use at least 16 characters for most everyday accounts, and go longer when the site allows it. Longer random passwords are usually easier and safer than trying to invent memorable patterns yourself. Store the result in a password manager so you do not need to remember it.
Should I include symbols?
Include symbols when the site accepts them, because they expand the character pool and make the password harder to guess. If a site rejects certain symbols, generate another password with symbols off, or copy the password and remove only the character the site refuses.
Why is there an option to avoid ambiguous characters?
Some passwords need to be read aloud, typed from paper, or copied across devices where copy-paste is not available. Avoiding characters like 0, O, I, l, and 1 reduces transcription mistakes. It slightly reduces the character pool, so use a longer length when enabling it.
